Finding the Bird

Once your binoculars are focused, the next thing to learn is how to quickly find a bird with your binoculars.  First, find the bird before you raise your binoculars.  Second, while staring at the bird hold your binoculars just below your eyes pointing in the general direction of the bird.  Third, find easily discernable reference points near the bird, such as a distinctive branch or white patch on a tree trunk, noting where the bird is with respect to one or more reference points.  Fourth, while staring intently at the bird, raise your binoculars and you should be looking at it.  If the image is out of focus, focus the binoculars for the correct distance using the reference points, and repeat the process.
